The Basic Rider Class - What to Expect
The Basic Rider class consists of approximately 5 hours of classroom and video training and 10 hours of motorcycle training on the range. The time on the range is split over two mornings, and the classroom portion is offered in one or two sessions depending on your specific class date. Be sure to check the schedule. The class requires bicycle-riding ability and the physical strength to lift a small motorcycle upright from its leaning position on the kickstand. Although it is rare, some will be unable to learn the skills required to control a motorcycle in the time allowed. This class does not guarantee a certificate of completion. However, we do make every effort available to help anyone who wants to become a motorcyclist achieve his or her dream.
What to Wear
All students are required to wear long pants, a jacket or long sleeves, boots or shoes that cover the ankle (no canvas high-tops), eye protection (sunglasses, prescription eyeglasses, or safety glasses), gloves and a helmet. We offer helmets, gloves and safety glasses to those who need them. We recommend getting your own safety gear for future use as a motorcyclist and for personal comfort during the class. Our gear will meet safety requirements but probably won't be as comfortable as what you would find from the selection at a motorcycle store. We are picky about your safety gear. Don't come in regular shoes or high heeled boots or forget your jacket. You will not be able to take the class.
What Will I Ride?
Austin Moto Academy has a variety of training motorcycles and scooters for our students to ride. A good training bike tends to be smaller in size and have a low seat height. Our bikes include the Kawasaki Eliminator 125, Suzuki GZ250, Hyosung GV250, and Kawasaki Ninja 250. Our training scooters are 50cc Hondas and Yamahas. If you are wanting to ride your own motorcycle or scooter, you can, but we recommend that you stick with one of ours.
What If It Rains?
We ride in all but the worst weather. Very high winds or very low visibility are the only conditions that cancel a class. Bring rain gear if it is raining. A two-piece rain suit is fairly inexpensive at an outdoor store and very useful to a motorcyclist.
How Much is the Class?
The state sets the rate for the class at $195 with some options for discounts. Check the class schedule for any discounts offered.
Can I Reschedule?
We require 48 hours notice to reschedule a class time. With a limited number of slots in each class, cancelling at the last minute does not allow adequate time to fill your reserved spot. Although we may have some flexibility and will try to help everyone with every unknown situation, our policy is that without 48 hour notice you will forfeit the class and receive no refund.
Can I Have a One-on-One Class?
If you are interested in a special class time for one to three students please click the 'contact us' link on the left. There is a premium rate for such a class but it may be perfect for those wanting to learn to ride in a more private setting and with more personal instruction.
