Scooter Riders

Scooter riders in Texas fall into two categories depending on the vehicle they ride. If your scooter is under 50cc, has no gears to change, and does not exceed 30 mph, then it is considered a moped under Texas law. Any other scooter is considered a motorcycle in Texas. Previously only a written test was required for a moped license, but since a moped license is a class M license with an under 50cc restriction, it falls under the new rules requiring the Basic Rider Class. As of September 1, 2009 any rider needing a first time class M license of any kind must complete a Basic Rider Class. There is no exception to this law.

Can I Take the Class on a Scooter?

Austin Moto Academy understands the problem faced by most scooter riders in Austin. You need a class M license but don't want to learn how to use a clutch to change gears. We offer scooters for use in the same Basic Rider course that the motorcyclists take. You can learn the same safe riding techniques needed to travel safely through Austin traffic without the requirement of full motorcycle operation. Be sure to notify us when signing up for the course that you want to ride a scooter in the class so that it will be available for your class. Also keep in mind that if you have any interest in riding a motorcycle this is the time. This is the perfect invironment to learn the motorcycle controls and see what it's like. And at any time you can move from a motorcycle to a scooter if you wish.
