Founder/Owner

Some would say I am obsessed with everything motorcycle. Over 30 years ago, to the disapproval of my mother, I pushed home my first bike: a 1972 Honda CB125s. A friend helped me rebuild the motor, I moved out of my parent’s house, and my life with motorcycles began. As a financially strapped young man I found forgotten bikes, moved them into my kitchen or bedroom and brought them back to life. As I made more money I bought nicer bikes but still rebuilt and maintained them, as well as my friends’ bikes, just because I loved doing it. I logged many miles across this country and others on a variety of bikes. The experienced riders, mechanics, and shop owners that I have known over the years have helped me follow my dreams on a motorcycle. Now I realize that being a part of the motorcycling community means giving back. Austin Moto Academy gives me the chance to share not only my knowledge, but my passion for bikes as well. I can talk motorcycles all day.

Vince Junod

Rider/Coach

I first rode motorcycles here in Austin in the early 90’s. After spending time in New York City and teaching English at Waseda University in Tokyo, I returned to Austin in 2010. It’s been great to be back in a place where I can camp, kayak, and ride motorcycles in my free time. I love teaching and have really enjoyed helping others learn to ride safely and responsibly.

Rob Carpenter

Rider/Coach

I have been riding motorcycles since I was 9 years old. I am a self-taught rider, as I started on a dirt bike in a plum orchard. I have ridden my motorcycle across the United States from coast to coast including many events and rallies. I currently own and ride Harley Davidson, Honda and Ducati motorcycles. I started coaching in 2017 and found that it is an amazing thing seeing a brand new rider who has never ridden a motorcycle before, take the first steps on their motorcycle journey. I have taught using the MSF programs beginner and intermediate classes. I am enthusiastic about coaching and hope to meet you on the range.

Jimmy Ledford

Rider/Coach

Originally from Michigan, I started riding motorcycles in 2003 when a friend let me ride his 1999 Suzuki GSXR 600. I immediately fell in love with riding. Shortly after I got my first bike and took my first Basic Riding course in Virginia to get my endorsement. Over the years I’ve had a variety of motorcycles. From 250cc-1300cc, and everything in between. Currently, I own a Ducati Hypermotard SP. I’ve been fortunate to be able to develop my motorcycle skills over the years through multiple riding courses, track time, racing, becoming a RiderCoach, and even living in multiple countries which allowed me to experience different perspectives/cultures of how they view motorcycles. I’m an avid trackday rider, and my passions include cars, bikes, and motorsports which always accompanies coffee. I love teaching motorcycle classes. I get to share my passion with others by showing how seriously fun it can be, but still being safe about it.

Jim Steele

Rider/Coach

I have a love and passion for motorcycling, as well as coaching and instructing. I started riding motorcycles at the age of 9 and grew up riding dirt bikes and racing motocross, before eventually receiving my motorcycle license. I got my license at 16 by attending a Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) course very similar to the safety course we teach/coach today. I have been a certified MSF/Harley-Davidson instructor/RiderCoach for over 27 years and currently ride a Harley-Davidson Ultra Limited. I am dedicated to motorcycling safely while turning aspiring riders’ dreams into their reality. A car can get you from one point to another, but a motorcycle…will move your soul!

I took this course at the end of June, 2026. I definitely got my money's worth and then some. Instructor Rob was a wealth of knowledge and made every lesson very practical, relatable, and instilled safety and confidence for the stakes of being out on the road amongst everyday drivers.
If you are starting fresh with little to no experience, you will have the tools to continue with confidence from the drills you learn in class. I hadn't ridden since I was a kid and in the beginning I didn't fully trust the bike or myself and by test out time, it all clicked, I felt confident and competent on the course test out. I am still practicing and getting better and following the rules instilled in me to stay safe on the road.
I will note that this course will make you a better, and more attentive driver as well. I notice so much more now when I see the road through a motorcycle operators perspective.
When you show up, show up ready to learn. It is a wealth of knowledge in this course when you put in the work.
Thank you very much Instructor Rob, I appreciate it.

It was a blast! Got to ride a little tiny Grom and a new dirt bike for my intermediate class. It was the best price I could find in the Austin area. It was affordable enough that I decided to stop riding dirty after all these years. The instructor was great and I think he handled everyone very well. It was a very judgment free zone for everyone. Definitely would recommend.

I just took the beginner course with Vince in the Austin location, and I highly recommend it for everyone looking into getting into riding the right way. Vince is a wonderful teacher that balances teaching and encouraging us to figure out what works for us as individuals. The bikes available to ride was a wide selection of lower CC bikes from older cafe racers to brand new dual sports, letting you learn on what you intend to ride.

And the course location was great for getting use to riding. It was on a minir slope, so we got the chance to get use to controlling the bike at and angle, uphill, and downhill. Which made me feel a lot more comfortable with being able to start riding on my own without an instructor right there to help me learn, because I got the chance to learn the basics with the added challenge.

On top of all of that, Vince made learning manual while learning to ride a comfortable experience. I stalled plenty, but I never felt embarrassed about it because of how encouraging he was with it all. Overall, I highly recommend taking this course with Vince and at this location. It was a great experience overall and boosted my confidence with a bike tenfold.

I took the two day course with Rob and he was fantastic. I came in with zero knowledge about a motorcycle besides just sitting on one, that was all I knew. I came out knowing all the basics about riding safely and confident in what I was doing. I was able to pass my certification and it was all thanks to Rob's way of explaining everything in detail, step by step, with a good and positive attitude and tons of encouragement.

Highly recommend you look no further and just book your lessons with Rob!

Took the basic course with Rob and I loved it! He was so patient with me since I had never ridden a motorcycle before. I felt very comfortable taking the class and riding for the first time. Even when I didn’t get things right the first couple times, Rob would be supportive and encouraging and help you through the exercise. Highly recommend!

I was a little concerned, being that AMA was out in the middle of almost nowhere. Yet I booked myself and my two adult children in as part of our recent acceptance that we are semi feral. The booking process and the communication from AMA was easy, bordering on fantastic. That said: if you can’t open and read an email you probably should sign up for something that doesn’t require you to following instructions. The facility is great for riding even if it lends itself to the slightly rustic side. Then again if you want to ride motorbikes you should probably learn to accept rustic for its ambiance. Rob was our instructor and an awesome one at that. He is a dedicated rider and instructor and it shows in everything he does. I cannot recommend him highly enough. The bikes are perfect. Yes you could wish for showroom bikes but these were school bikes and they were great. Ish. The course was easy to follow and well presented. Rob made sure not to leave anyone behind and spent extra time with those in need of it. All said and done I feel if you want to learn to ride motorbikes this is a fantastic choice. I give AMA 5 stars and recommend them to anyone. Thanks Rob.

I can’t say enough great things about AMA; I was referred by a coworker, who gave a glowing review of Rob, but by the time I was able to register for class, only Vince’s class was available, which was absolutely incredible. You can tell these guys have high standards, but they give you the tools to meet them. I had only ever been a backpack before, and I left feeling so confident that I have the tools to be a great, safe rider. There was a range of bikes to practice on, as well as extra gear to borrow if you don’t have your own. If you’re on the fence about taking this course, get off and do it. You won’t regret it!
